August 2018 Favourites
Happy September y’all! Seriously, how is it September? And it is still warm in Ireland, say what? I am longing for that cooler weather after this extreme summer. Remind me I wished for the cold in a few weeks when I am over it! Update: it has taken me 500 years to write this post and it is now starting to cool down, lol. And just before we get started, as always, I am not a member of any affiliate programs, so I will not make any commission if you do make any purchases from the links included in this post.
This post is going to be a bit different from previous ‘favourites’ posts. This turned out to be a bit of a ramble but y’all seem to like those, or that’s what my analytics tell me!
Work has been crazy and I feel like anytime I was at home, I was doing chores or sleeping. That isn’t fun or glamourous but that’s the truth. I feel like I am only slowly getting my house back into some type of order. As we approach autumn (even if it doesn’t feel like it) I am trying to organize the house before we start this new season. The heat is making the transition difficult as I can’t put our summer clothes away and start to pull out the winter wear.
Speaking of cooler weather, I really want to make soups this winter. I am doing better as a cook and feel confident to add a new meal in! If you have any tips or recipes please let me know! I know I need to get a bigger stockpot and an immersion blender but that’s about it. Any slow cooker soup recipes are also appreciated because I live for the crock pot. I don’t like recipes that contain 55 ingredients and 54 of them being stuff I don’t already have in the kitchen.
I do have two ‘favorite’ things from August that I want to share with y’all and they are both beauty related. The first is the Sculpted by Aimee Connolly The Essentials Brush Set. I had been wanting this set for some time (like since January) and when Cloud 10 had 10% off I bit the bullet and finally bought them. Aimee Connolly is an Irish makeup artist who also runs a makeup school and has a line of her own products. I am obsessed with her Rose Gold Edition Palette, which I believe is sadly being discontinued. Ireland is such a small country so it is super important to support Irish brands and businesses as much as possible. The buffer brush in the set is my absolute favorite and I can tell a difference in the appearance of my foundation when I use this brush. The price for the 6 brushes you get is fair because they are such high quality and you get a nice leather kit to keep them in. I have single brushes from MAC that aren’t even as nice as the Aimee Connolly brushes that cost me just as much. This set is also good for someone who isn’t super into makeup but is looking for the essentials. It is equally as good for someone who is into makeup to add some fabulous, high-quality brushes to their collection.
My second favorite thing I want to share from this month is, and I know I am probably late to the party on this, but whatever – Jeffree Star YouTube videos! I am so old that I remember Jeffree Star being a thing in Hot Topic (throwback!) but I never really knew much about him. Also, I will totally admit I am probably too old to be watching YouTubers but he is the only one I watch and I really enjoy his content, sooooo who actually cares? I watched Shane Dawson’s series, The Secret World of Jeffree Star on YouTube – why this was a suggested video for me I don’t know since I basically only watch Dr. Phil clips on YouTube. Actually, now that I type that out it makes sense because both are dramatic as hell. This series was done so well; I was hooked. I was waiting for the next episode each time one ended. I had no idea about Jeffree Star until I watched this. Even if you’re just interested in how people build businesses from nothing or like documentaries, you should check out The Secret World of Jeffree Star.
I love that his videos aren’t tutorials but I still learn new tricks while watching. I know he used to pretty much only do high-end brands but he is now doing also drugstore too. I don’t believe a lot of influencers or YouTubers since they’re paid to promote products but he doesn’t get paid by the companies or do links so I (still a bit skeptically) believe him when he gives reviews of products. I mean, he spends his own money or is sent PR packages so he has no reason to lie. Him and his boyfriend are also soooo cute! I love when they do videos together! I actually purchased the Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina pallete after much debate when I watched his review. If anyone is wondering what to get me for a present anytime soon I have my eye on the Mini Nudes Bundle: Volume 1 and the Pink Lemonade Velour Lip Scrub! Christmas is closer than you think!
I took two trips in August. One was in Ireland to Waterford, a county I had never been to which I will write a separate post on. The other was to London to see an old friend from college in America. My trip to London was super-fast, like I flew over on a Wednesday morning and was back in Dublin on Friday morning, but it was so worth it to see an old friend. Because we have both been to London multiple times we skipped the tourist bits and ate and drank like there was no tomorrow…. because there really wasn’t with our short amount of time there! I am not going to do an entire post on London but I will share with you where we went! Before that though, I want to say that it was so nice to just relax on this trip. Without sounding like the most unappreciative person ever, I feel like the last few trips I have gone on have been so go, go, go to see so much that there was hardly any relaxing which I think is an essential part of holidays too. Not having to be anywhere at a specific time or stress about missing a sight/exhibit/etc. was such a relief! All that said here are some crappy iPhone pictures from my trip and recommendations of where to eat/drink.
La Bodega Negra– yummy and affordable Mexican. Mexican food is not a thing in Ireland. Or maybe after growing up in Florida eating authentic Mexican food I am being picky!
Peggy Porschen Cakes– Instagram heaven. Staff was unreal. Cakes were okay but that’s not really the reason you’re going.
Doughnut Time– just go here. The doughnut is huge and it is better than the cake at Peggy Porschen Cakes
Pimlico Fresh– really fresh brunch and juices. pricey, but good – especially if you were drinking a few hours before!
Gordon’s Wine Bar – this is thought to be the oldest wine bar in London. I saw this in a Instagram story from Alyson Haley and it was worth the visit. The wine and the company were as good as it gets!
This month on the blog in terms of travel, I shared my favorites as always in July 2018 Favourites. For some Dublin recommendations, I talked about A Day Out in The Liberties and my First Time Facial at The Buff Day Spa. Wynee from Wynee’s World kindly nominated me for a Liebster Award which I discussed in Liebster Award Nominations.
Another exciting bit from this month was being featured in the Bloggers group of the Girl Crew app. I had totally forgotten that I had filled out a form to be featured because I figured I wouldn’t be chosen since the application said they typically only share blogs that have been running for over a year. I only found out I was chosen when a friend texted me a screenshot of the feature! The group has over 12,000 members from all over the globe so I was happy and appreciative for the exposure.
I love hearing from y’all and if you made it down to here you seem to like hearing from me too! If you want to say hello, have an idea for a post you would like to see me do, or want to collaborate, you can contact me here or send me a DM on Instagram. You can also send me a message on Facebook or @ me on Twitter. Don’t forget I am on Bloglovin’ and Pinterest too if you want to follow along there as well!
