Hi!

I’m Alexandra. An American girl living in Dublin, Ireland. I honestly document my adventures in travel, food, beauty, and expat life on a budget.

January 2018 Favourites

January 2018 Favourites

Hey y'all! I hope everyone is off to an amazing start of 2018. To wrap up the first month of 2018 I thought I would do a roundup of all the things I couldn’t get enough of this past month.

WHAT I READ: Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling: The Novel by Emer McLysaght & Sarah Breen

Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling: The Novel

If you are an Irish woman or a woman living in Ireland in their mid-20s to early 30s you will 100% completely get this book. Outside of that, I don’t think there is a huge audience for this. To really appreciate some of the humor/behaviors written about in the book you would have to have had spent a significant amount of time in Ireland, or dare I say more specifically, Dublin. I really want to commend the conversation on abortion in this, bringing attention to the Repeal movement in a way I was not expecting when I picked up the book. We all know an Aisling, some cases more extreme than others, and like the authors say, we all have a bit of Aisling in us too. Definitely check Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling: The Novel for a quick, easy, and a more insightful than I originally gave it credit for, read.

WHAT I WATCHED: Twin Peaks

Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks

I have not stopped thinking about Twin Peaks since I finished it. I have only finished the original first two seasons but after that ending I need to watch the film they made and the third season that was on recently. Twin Peaks is playfully cheesy mocking soap operas and is filled with drama, sci-fi, and dark humor. It does get downright bizarre at certain points but after finishing the first two seasons I can see why it has such a cult following. This is a show that will definitely keep you guessing.

BEAUTY OBSESSION: Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Rose Gold Edition

I have been scared to attempt contouring in any way but with the Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Rose Gold Edition, Aimee makes it so easy. I watched how she used it on her Instagram story and followed exactly what she did – it could not be simpler. I have been using the bronzer and the rose gold sheen on my eyelids too and I am delighted with the look this palette delivers. For the palette and the Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Sculpt & Highlighter Brush you only pay €29.95. For reference the brush alone retails for €12.95 so I think this is a great deal. I purchased mine on Cloud 10 for 20% off and they regularly offer discounts so I would suggest ordering from there. I am really impressed with the brush so I now have my eye on the Essentials Brush Set if anyone is looking for a late birthday gift for me!

WHAT I LISTENED TO: What I just couldn't stop listening to this month

As for New Year Resolutions? I don’t typically make them but this year I am, but I am being sensible in them. There is no point in making outrageous resolutions only to be defeated when they don’t occur in a short amount of time. Or is that only me? Anyway, my resolutions are as follow:

Improve my balance – I do yoga a few times a week but I still struggle with my balance. I am, and have been clumsy since, about forever, so this is something I would like to improve on.

Do the dishes nightly – I do the dishes in the house and I am so bad for leaving them. Oh, how I wish we had a dishwasher! I need to start doing the dishes after dinner is done and not saying ‘ah, sure, I’ll just leave it til tomorrow’, because tomorrow turns into like 3 days later and a buildup of dishes. Gross, but true, and it must stop.

Save all my Boots points – This is more of a challenge than a resolution I suppose, but I once read about a woman who saved all her Boots points for a year and then had enough points in December to buy most of her Christmas gifts with them. I told myself I would do this in 2017 and I didn’t. Time to give it a go again.

Do the €5 challenge – Another challenge!  I saw this on the Instagram of a girl I went to college with had a baby, so she and her husband started putting every fiver note they got back when making purchases away to build a savings for their baby. At one point they had quickly saved around 400 just by popping one fiver they came across away. I did this for a while and got up to around 70 but I would love to commit to do it and see how much I can save.

Save money – OF COURSE. I know this is on everyone’s list, but I have decided 2018 is the year we need to really start saving for a house since it looks like we will be staying in Ireland for the long-term. LOL that we will get a house in Dublin though. Maybe Leo's parents could loan me a few grand?

This month on the blog I introduced myself to y’all in Meet Candid Alexandra! and discussed brunch in Dining in Dublin: Beckett & Bull. If you would like to contact me to collaborate, to say hi, or have an idea for a post you would like me to do, you can reach me through the contact page, send me a DM on Instagram, message me on Facebook, or send me a tweet on Twitter. Don’t forget to follow me on Bloglovin’ too!
